Fight Club : Troy

The Hulk and Legolas, the elven archer, take on Brad Pitt in the new epic film Troy. In this prequel to Fight Club, Brad Pitt is back as Tyler Durden and we learn the roots of Fight Club extend back to ancient greece. We even get a peek at the original Greco-Roman version of the rules of Fight Club.

1.) Agamemnon is not my king.
2.) Don't talk about Fight Club.
3.) All fallen fighters deserve proper burials.
4.) Don't talk about Fight Club.

Legolas gets beaten pretty badly in one of the early rounds of Fight Club : Troy. But he survives and we see him perfecting his archery. Later his skill with the bow brings down the seemingly unbeatable Durden. It's as if he some how finds his one weakness. His...what would you call that?...critical flaw?

Eric Bana as the Hulk should have been more than a match for Durden but apparently Tyler didn't make him mad enough to "hulk out". Bana fights bravely and quite well but more than mortal strength is needed against the god-like Pitt. It's extremely disappointing we never see Bana transform into the green goliath. Without his gamma charged muscles, Durden kills him in front of his wife and family.

The brutality of Fight Club : Troy might have been avoided entirely had Legolas not stolen the bride of King Menalaus. Speaking of King Menalaus -- one Greek soldier says to the other greek soldier "With all these sweaty warriors in short skirts we should be able ta find some men ta lay us."

Like most sequels it isn't as good as the original Fight Club. Ed Norton is noticeably missing, although it could be argued that Durden's more civilized alter ego was unnecassary in ancient warrior times and therefore not yet developed. The budget for this prequel easily eclipses the original and they certainly deliver more fighting. But the plot twists and witty dialogue are not to be found. All in all Troy is an enjoyable visit with three old friends in a different time and place.
