SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that forcing children to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is an unconstitutional "endorsement of religion" because of the phrase "under God". The phrase was added in 1954 by an act of Congress.

Ted Brehm was a congressional representative from Utah from 1948-1958. "What can I say? It was the 50's, we faced the encroachment of the devil in our malt shops, on our Victrolas with the Elvis Presley and in those pointy brassiers under those soft fuzzy sweaters. We wanted to reinforce the beliefs of good moral Americans in the mind of every school child."
